Jesse was standing by the bar with an untouched glass in his hand, frowning at the tips of his shoes and looking a little lost. I wished I could have a drink and let my brain go numb, but I still had problems to solve, so that probably wouldn’t happen in this century.

“How much did you understand?” I asked quietly. I knew he spoke some Romanian, but I didn’t know how well. We had only communicated in English so far.

“Enough,” he said. His dark blue eyes narrowed as he looked at me. “Do you honestly think that this is a good idea? The ball, I mean.”

“I don’t know,” I said and went to sit on the armrest of the couch with my hands folded in my lap. “I know that anyone who wants to keep this whole affair secret won’t dare detain you if I’m around. You’ll be as safe as one can be. They were right about that.”

“And I’ll get to meet your vampire?”

“He’s not my vampire,” I bristled, inhaling deeply to keep my temper under control. I was used to bickering with my friends, and it didn’t affect me much, but arguing with him was a new experience for me. “His name is Maximilien Hess, and I’m afraid there’s no way around it. You will get to meet him if we choose this path of action.”

“We? I wasn’t aware I had a choice.”

“You give the Little Council too much credit.” I gave him a bitter smile. “Of course you have a choice.” Later on, the situation might change and require drastic actions on my part, but for now, I could afford to be generous and listen to him. “So what do you think?”

Jesse played with his glass, still not drinking from it, and didn’t answer right away. “Will you really take me to the ball with you if I agree with their plan?”

It was my turn to give it serious thought, but when I answered, I meant it. “Yes.” It would drive the tabloids wild with assumptions regarding who he was and what it meant. Maybe it was time to make some waves and divert their attention from the real problem.

“Why?” He watched me with unhidden interest in his eyes, like I was a puzzle he was trying to solve. “You’re breaking your own laws here. You don’t want any witnesses to that. So why go through all that trouble?”

I ran my hand along my thigh, feeling the strap of the stake underneath the knee-length skirt. “Because I got you into this mess. Well, Dr. Sofronie did—” I rolled my eyes a little “—but it wouldn’t be fair to blame it on him in his absence, would it?” He didn’t answer, knowing it was a rhetorical question. “We live by two main rules here. Kill all vampires and protect the innocents. You’re a collateral victim, and I can save you. I’m doing my job, that’s all.”

He slowly shook his head, not necessarily in reaction to my words but more likely to the entire situation.
